*Course Info*

Course Goals ~ Introduces and develops understanding of principles of rhetoric; basic research methods; elements, strategies, and conventions of persuasion used in constructing written and multi-modal texts. Upon completion of English 103 students will:
1. I understand this because I was given assignments to teach me the importance of persuasion.
2. I feel confident that I understand persuasive meanings and audiences because I was shown multiple videos that proved that. I also proved that myself through my public writing essay.
3. I feel as though I can work on this because it's hard for me to structure and revise my essays.
4. I feel as though the information involving this particular course goal was covered and the use of examples and hands-on experience helped me understand the concepts more.
5. I feel better about this because the public writing assignment required me to analyze different sources and use them to support or negate my argument.
6. I feel indecisive about this because I need to work on being critical and revising my own texts, but when it comes to others, its very easy for me to find mistakes and help them correct it.
7. Taking AP English Literature in high school gave me the basic knowledge for appropriate format, syntax, language, and spelling in my writing. I feel confident in this because English 103 helped me re-establish and further my knowledge of the appropriate literary techniques.
8. My high school teachers didn't really "baby" their students either, so taking my own responsibility for my work was really easy to adapt to in this class.
9. The peer reviews really helped me develop my ability to work with others. Listening to people give constructive criticism or not definitely helped me strengthen some of my essays.

Course Content & Format ~ The content and format of English 103 are designed to enable students to achieve the course goals; specifically, students in English 103 will:
1. I feel confident about this because I was able to analyze and discuss things within my peer review group, as well as pieces of work from others to help with my papers.
2. Creating a multimodal argument really helped with my response to persuasive logic.
3. I feel confident about this because we often did peer and intensive reviews for our essays. Collaborating with others really helped strengthen my essays.
4. I feel confident in this because professor McArdle is always available when I have questions about my writing. Also, I got a lot of feedback from one of my essays which really encouraged me to take another look at my organization and change a few things.
5. By doing the public writing assignment,I am confident that I can shape my writing for a specific audience and purpose
6. My rhetorical analysis paper enabled me to break down someone else's writing and interpret the meaning of what they were trying to say.
7. This class enabled me to practice my writing and learn different techniques within four different types of essays.

University Core Curriculum Goals ~ The central purpose of University Core Curriculum is to enable men and women to live rich and satisfying lives and to undertake the broad responsibilities of citizenship in a free society. Although The University Core Curriculum seeks to discover and nurture individual talents, its primary emphasis is preparation for roles people share as human beings and as members of family and community groups. Thus, students will be able to:
1. I feel confident in this because professor McArdle really made me think about things instead of just giving us complete answers.
2. Communication is essential in everyday life. This class in particular furthered my communicating skills through use of group work and working with my peers for review assignments.
3. My first essay, This I Believe, reminded me of my own values. Being able to read and constructively criticize the works of others reminded me to be sensitive to their values because I know how important my values are to me.
4. I feel confident in this because I have used contemporary and historical evidence and events to help me structure most of my essays.
5. I don't feel confident in this because I haven't experienced enough of certain problems to solve them.
6. I feel that I am working on this more and more each day and this class really helped me because I had to focus on a lot of my interest in order to prepare well=written essays that actually mean something to me.
